Get involved
Start by showing up
Every Tuesday morning we meet online for Office Hours. No sign-up, no preparation. Just come.
Your first steps
Join the Community of Practice
A Community of Practice is recognized by the charactaristic that it facilitates legitimate peripheral participation. In short: Your participation is qualified by your interest — not by profession or skill. You can start by hanging around and listening in, our you can take your existing 10 people FOSS project and enjoy the stewardship of the MoM FOSS Alliance.
Either way you are heartly ♥️ welcome.
Step 0: Get onto Matrix
Matrix is where our community talks. It´s comparable to Slack, Discord, Teams, Signal (...etc). We use it because it speaks to our values; Open Source, Open Standard, federated, decentralized, under trust-worthy stewardship by a non-profit foundation.
If you already have a Matrix account, you can use it – jump stright to next step. If not, you can create one in a few minutes.
Step 1: Join our Matrix space, say 'Hi👋' in the General room
Join our open space: #mindovermachine:matrix.org with your matrix account. Then look up the General room #mom‑general:matrix.org and just say 'Hi👋'
Or something more elaborate along the lines of:
Hi👋, I'm [name]. I work with [what you do].
I found MoM through [person/event/article].
I'm curious about [something], and I could imagine helping with [something, or "not sure yet"].
Step 2: Come to Office Hours
Every Tuesday morning we get online and check in with each other. It's an opportunity to connect, collaborate, and contribute. It's a free space for discussion and idea generation.
Step 3: Explore
A lot goes on in our published writings. You can learn about our work and ideas. We issue Essays, Briefs, Comments, and Journals

How people grow here
Four stages, no levels
You read along, come to Office Hours now and then, and listen. Next step: say hi and ask one question.
You join discussions, comment on ideas and come fairly regularly. Next step: bring a topic to Office Hours.
You take a small, bounded task: review a text, test a tool, help run an event, write a brief, fix an issue. Next step: ask "what could I help with this week?" in Matrix or at Office Hours.
You own something over time: a project, an event series, a piece of writing, a circle. Next step: talk to us about joining the Initiative Circle.
There are no levels, badges or entry tests. Moving back to hanging around is fine, and nobody will ask you to explain.
Where things live
Find your way around
